This chalk paint dresser makeover is a small hutch but, a dresser all the same. The actual dresser part has a small shelf set that sits on top to make it like a hutch.
I found it for a whopping $20 at a second-hand store. I liked the detail on the top drawers that made it not-so-plain. It’s smaller size fits well in my front living room.
Quick Steps In This Chalk Paint Dresser Makeover
This chalk paint dresser makeover was a quick project! From beginning to end it took maybe an hour and 30 minutes. I wiped the whole piece of furniture down with soapy water. Then, I only used painting tape on a couple of edges. I removed hardware and then I mixed up my chalk paint. I slapped chalk paint on with a brush, adding in water as needed, and as soon as I was finished with the first coat I started the second coat. Chalk paint dries extremely fast so I was able to do that by starting at the same end I started the first coat of chalk paint. Then I added the original hardware back, took off the paint tape and done. Under 90 minutes!

Sealing the Chalk Paint Dresser Makeover
So, there is one important step missing that would push this chalk paint dresser makeover to two hours if I had done it at the same time. I did not seal the paint until later. But that brings us to an interesting experiment! After several days I sealed part of the dresser with wax. A year later I sealed the unsealed part with a clear poly coat. You can read more here about the difference in sealing chalk paint with wax or poly (and what happens when you don’t seal it at all).
Brush Strokes When Painting By Hand
You can tell on this chalk paint dresser makeover that there are visible paint strokes if you look close. On the top piece of the hutch it is barely noticeable. The brush strokes seemed more noticeable after sealing the dresser. If you want a smooth finish, with no brush strokes, then sand the furniture down with 220 grit after you chalk paint and before sealing it.
Paint Colors
The color I used is beautiful. The pictures here don’t quite do it justice. It is a marvelous color and one of my favorites that is classic. It’s Behr (S470-7) Undersea.
There are a few go-to colors that you can’t wrong with. This is one of them! Charcoal grey and white are also classic colors that look fabulous on furniture makeovers and people love.
I love using this chalk paint recipe that allows me to run to Home Depot (or any paint store) and grab a $3 sample size of any paint color to use on my furniture projects. It’s inexpensive and versatile. The process for using any chalk paint brand or recipe is the same.
Finished Chalk Paint Dresser Makeover
This hutch, or dresser, has been sitting in my front room next to a high traffic area. My small kids play around it and get games in and out of the drawers often. It still looks great.
