Vinyl Siding Before and After Photos

We’ve worked SO hard to transform our home, particularly in the exterior remodeling. I HATED the way it looked before (But we still bought it!). And today it brings us SO much joy to see it and feel good about the way it looks. Here is our Vinyl Siding Before and After.

We brought this old 1950’s home from run-down and well, frankly an eye-sore, to something nice and quaint with the exterior remodeling. What used to be one of the worst homes on the street is now looking pretty good.

As you can probably tell, the exterior remodeling isn’t 100% completed (I’m looking at you brown, dilapidated trim above the carport). Speaking of carports- where I’m from and where I grew up carports were only something you saw on low-end homes. Here, in the area we now live, they are much more common and often nicely done. Interesting how that changes from area to area. Hey, it is what it is, right?

We- my husband and I (but mostly my husband), did all the changes for this exterior remodeling ourselves, with the help of friends on occasion. Good old DIY work. It took working on the home exterior remodeling for about 3 years to get to where we are now. That’s largely because we have had so many other obligations that are time for working on it seemed minimal. Plus, my husband, although very handy, had never done before a lot of the jobs it involved. He had to learn those things before doing them. We have youtube university to thank for that.

Before

This isn’t entirely a before picture from when we bought the house, unfortunately. The rock wall in the front yard along the sidewalk was not there. The earliest picture I could find of our home was after we had added the rock wall. Otherwise it’s pretty close to the way we bought the home.

After

I think we made a trip to Home Depot at least once a week, and in some cases more. It helped that my husband’s office was close to one. We frequented That place more than anywhere else.

The Biggest Change- Vinyl Siding Before and After

There’s a long list of projects we have gone through to change the exterior of our home but undoubtedly the actual siding on the home, this vinyl siding before and after, has made the single biggest difference.

Painting the exterior would be the simplest option. However, my husband didn’t want to worry about keeping up the paint over the years. The sun hits our home hard on the west side every evening. Even if didn’t, paint doesn’t last all that long. Vinyl would be longer lasting (less maintenance) and it would change the overall look of the home instead of slapping color over the worn down and breaking shingles. Vinyl siding was the next best option without breaking the bank.

I got a couple of bids for having our home sided with basic vinyl. We knew that was a big project to tackle, had no previous experience, and wanted to know if it was worth paying to have vinyl siding done. One bid was around $15k and the other one was over $20k. Are you kidding? This home is tiny! That made the decision for us! DIY it was.

Finding Good Deals Or Discounts On Vinyl Siding

The biggest place where Home Depot came in big for us was the vinyl siding. We got a fantastic deal for buying in bulk. All materials for siding the home, including tools, was under $3,000. It felt good to save so much money by doing it ourselves. What a drastic update on a house for such a little budget.

You can save money at Home Depot when you buy in bulk, even if you’re buying more than a few pieces. There is a professional services desk at the front where you can look at samples, ask questions, get good deals such as bulk discounts, and find more color choices (in-store stock only carries neutral colors).

We even called around to other companies who specialized or manufactured the vinyl siding but Home Depot was THE way to go. Extend a bulk order discount by adding other materials from Home Depot to your vinyl siding order.

And just so you know, Home Depot offers services to install the vinyl siding for you. This can be great if you don’t want to touch the whole DIY approach but it will cost. The process is they give your information to a company that contracts through Home Depot.

My husband watched multiple youtube videos to figure out how to side our home. We worked on it together in the evenings and on many, many Saturdays.

Another plus is recent technology that has made vinyl siding more colorfast, meaning we shouldn’t have to worry about the color fading, making it easier to decide on a darker color.

List of Projects that Transformed this Home Exterior Remodeling

  • Built rock wall in front from rocks and concrete mortar mix bags (It’s in the Before picture simply because I didn’t have a picture that dated to before the rock wall- it was our first project)
  • Replaced picture windows with windows that can be opened
  • Re-roofed the carport and back patio
  • Tore out concrete flower garden area where the garage was built
  • Poured concrete base for garage (and patched ares in the driveway that was cracking)
  • Built Garage
  • Wired electricity to Garage
  • Painted the brown trim (that would not be replaced with vinyl trim) white
  • Took off old siding and replaced with new
  • Added sprinkler system
  • Put grass in our yard

I’m thinking about writing a separate article for some or each of the projects in better detail, if I can find enough interest. So, please comment or message me below if you are interested!
